Yarn along...crochet lessons with a 6 year old

My 6 year old niece broke her arm and is taking a break from karate class, so while her 4 year old sister is in class, she is coming to my house to learn how to crochet.
As for me, I'm making this slouchy hat....which is turning out really cute so far, don't you think? i love a free pattern. And I'm reading this book Heaven is for Real that someone in church gave to my 10 year old daughter, she read it in one day (she loved it), so now it's my turn!

  1. Such a wonderful skill to pass on. I was about the same age when my mother taught me, and I have been trying to teach my 7 year old as well. Have so much fun!!

Hope your week is going well, and your chickens are staying warm in this winter weather!!

  6. My grandmother taught me how to crochet around this age and I'm so thankful she did.

  7. I'm impressed by the broken-armed crocheting! And your hat is looking great; I love the bobbles.

About the three kings' cake you commented on...I used (not very successfully, I have to say) the recipe in "The Children's Year," but there are many. It's a tradition we added last year. We've always taken down our tree and Christmas decorations on Epiphany, but with a young child, I realized how sad that feels, and thought adding a fun thing--a cake--to celebrate Epiphany would help. It did. I'm realizing more and more the value of small rituals and celebrations throughout the year.

  9. Love that hat. It reminds me of the berets I used to crochet constantly. If you're on ravelry, it's a free download there: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/puff-beret#
