A few of my favorite homeschool books...

Just 2 that I really want to share with you today: These were given to us with the K12 curriculum for my 5th grader, Hannah. The exercises in these books are very useful, Exercises in English often give sentences that teach you about something, like American history (e.g. Neil Armstrong) that are written incorrectly, where you have to write the correct form of the verb or underline the adjectives. The vocabulary one is nice, because at the beginning of each unit, they give you the words, with their dictionary meaning and an example of it used in a sentence. They are both workbooks, which I'm not fond of in general, but when you need one to help you with basic grammar, these are excellent!

We think of homeschooling on our "own" without a set curriculum...and if we did, these two books are ones that we would purchase!

  1. Who is the publisher of Exercises for English? I was just looking into something like this today for my daughter. We prefer to use Charlotte Mason approach for most things, but for grammar I would like to give her something else just to give her an overview of the basics. This sounds interesting.

  2. We are considering using K12 next year for my oldest who will be in 1st garde. How do you like using it?

  3. Loyola Press publishes Exercises in English. I really like it. Overall, I think K12 is good. We are using it because the state of Ohio will pay for it as a public school curriculum for you to use as you learn in your home! I like that my tax $ is still going towards the education of my children. Their history is fabulous...a Classical approach, we have Susan Wise Bauer's "Story of the World" CDs that we got from our library to supplement, they mesh very well! If I had to buy their curriculum, I would probably just select 2 courses (history and math?) and supplement the rest with material and novels from the library!

  4. We are looking at it for cost reasons as well. Are they fairly flexible with th days requirement? How do you handle school on feast days?
