Green

Join the giveaway on Wayfaring Wanderer's blog...what a great way to open up discussion on ways to recycle, reduce and reuse. I dislike wasting things. My girls have been saving everything - e.g. we went to the library for storytime and they brought home the little Dixie cup that held pretzels in it, to use in their sandbox!

What am I doing?
  • I bring cloth bags (or reuse Trader Joe's paper sacks) to the store
  • We've been recycling here, but now give it to my parents, they get PAID per pound of recyclables!!!
  • I use cloth napkins (thanks, Dad! He gave us a set of 16, I think, for a Christmas gift 2 years ago)
  • We don't throw good stuff away, we give it to Goodwill if we don't need it
  • Instead of using cleaning chemicals, I use vinegar and water for most things!
  • I try to buy stuff as local as I can, at least American-grown or made
5 things I could do:
  • Compost, I need to make a bin, any suggestions?
  • Bake 2 things in the oven to waste less gas later (I just baked a pizza and delicata squash at the same time a few days ago)
  • Drive less, walk or ride my bike MORE
  • Use reusable sanitary napkins (I have been wanting to do this for a long time)
  • Next baby, go cloth!

I still make ATCs (artist trading cards, just 2.5 x 3.5 inches):

Anyone want to trade?

  1. Thanks for sharing this Marfa. I posted my 10 things and nominated you to win as well (on my family blog), since I found out about it on your blog :)

    Thanks!

  2. I recently read about people getting paid for their recycling.....What a great incentive! I think more people would recycle if they could expect that.

What about adding the 5 things that you don't do, but could do?

  7. I'm always up for an ATC swap, just fill in the details.

I'm about to overshare, but I've been using cloth pads for about 15 years now, in combination with a cup. Email me for more details.

  8. Hi Thanks for sharing. And thank your friend for sharing. I too am about to be over sharing...

I have been using cloth sanitary pads for 10 + years now and here's a tip... make them out of a patterned fabric so they will look cleaner longer. That natural organic cotton flannel is so lovely but... I like plaid (repuposed flanel shirt) it makes me laugh at my self when I'm all moody and grumpy.
P.S. I did not like the cup I am hoping some one will make some improvements.

  9. You can make a composter out of old pallets. You make them into box's. Two beside each other is best so you can "turn" the compost often. You then use a icecream bucket under your sink for your daily contributions to your compost. Everything can go in there except meat & dairy. Coffee grinds and the filter are awesome too...as is dryer lint. We just pile it all on...mix it up...let it sit and whalla...wonderful soil! Good luck!

  10. Did you find a bin idea? Kevin made a bin you can turn w/ a motor out of an old oil barrel. Although we don't use it anymore because now we give our "compost" food to the chickens.
