Summer garden...

Before:
After:

The first photo I took on May 21 and the second one when we got home from our South Carolina vacation...May 31. That's what 10 days of good growing weather looks like here in Ohio.
Granola (a recipe from Jamie's Food Revolution cookbook)

Preheat the oven to 350. Put your dry granola ingredients including coconut and cinnamon, except for the dried fruit on a sheet pan. Stir well and smooth out. Mix maple syrup and oil in a small bowl. Drizzle over granola and stir. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, stir every 5 minutes with a wooden spoon. While it is roasting chop up any large dried fruit. When the granola is nice and golden, remove it from the oven and add the dried fruit. Once it is cooled, store in sealed container, up to 2 weeks.

Children should enjoy learning...if not, there's something wrong. Check out this episode on Nightline a few days ago on "unschooling,"although I do like more structure and discipline, I think each family should do what they think is best when it comes to education. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Schooled by Gordon Korman, a boy who is unschooled is taken away from his homestead and put into public school...very intriguing! What are your thoughts on this subject?

P.S. Remember that cute little book? Here's the link to her website...and another sweet page:

Ooooo. . .beautiful garden. If you had done that here in CO, you would see NO change whatsoever. That's what's so frustrating about growing ANYTHING here!! Except weeds, that is. That looks like a really interesting book. I'm going to check into that one. The more I homeschool, the more organized I get. However, the more I homeschool, the more I realize that anyone should have the freedom to do whatever the heck they want with their own families.

Your garden looks great! I was so impressed last summer by it, too.

As for unschooling, I know we are going to take a much more structured approach in our home. Some of that has to do with the fact that we are homeschooling with the Latin School. So a lot of the curriculum we do not have a say about- although, we are delighted but what we have already seen. The other part has to do with my children. They work much better with structure; they thrive on it. I know that there will certainly be freedom, but I would not going anywhere near what the Martin family is doing. I know that your girls are incredibly smart/educated. So your approach is working. I am not quite sure if her's is because from that video (which was obviously biased) it seems like the children are not very educated and mostly rambunctious. But I am sure the editing was very purposeful in that regard. Keep doing what you're doing because it is definitely working. I'll have to wait and see when we actually start school how everything will play out.

Hi Marfa! I so enjoy reading your scrumptious blog, which I found while looking for blogs by Orthodox women. Your recipes and tips for e.g. egg dying are very useful! Thanks for the memory jog about Gordon Korman - I loved reading his hilarious Macdonald Hall and other books way back when.
